Nothing Is Ever As Good, Or As Bad, As It Seems…

In our lives, when times are great, we feel amazing, like it will go for ever… And when times are bad, we always see them as really bad. Yet what reality is, is that nothing is ever as good, or as bad as it seems.

When everything is crumbling around you and you’re feeling a lack of hope, a lack of certainty, you should know that it is never as bad as it seems, “this too shall pass, you will get through this”. Yet when we are in the midst of negative events which will pop up throughout our lives, sometimes we struggle to see the light at the end of the tunnel, or sometimes we complain about how unfair our lives are proving to be.

To be content with any situation, we first have to come to acceptance with the fact that life is difficult. “Once you accept that life is difficult, life is no longer difficult” – M. Scott Peck. If we truly accept that pain and unfortunate circumstances are just a part of life, we learn to move on and roll with the punches.

Acceptance is the gateway to perspective, and this rules supreme in terms of allowing us to see life in its entirety, to see past everyone’s judgements and opinions on whether something is good or bad. We then ultimately see that nothing is ever that good, or that bad, as soon as we can change our thinking toward this reference, life is a lot easier to deal with.

The second part of this is gratitude, ultimately unlocking the ability to feel content in any situation. When we can reframe our thinking from even the slightest sense of entitlement and expectation to privilege and gratitude, the life we live becomes almost blissful. If you can recognise the incredible privilege around our lives, for example being able to have a hot shower, a home cooked dinner, a bed to sleep on, even just saying three things every day that are most simple in your life that we may take for granted, you will actually become more grateful. I challenge you to do this, whether it be saying three things you’re grateful for before you go to sleep or writing it through the steam on the window of the shower, give it a go.

All in all, perspective and gratitude will hold oneself in great stead for encountering difficulties, and to be humble in triumphs. So too by accepting that life is difficult, we harness the maturity to not absorbed by our successes, but to also not be disheartened during our weaker times, as nothing is ever as good, or as bad as it appears to be. My favourite quote, “this too shall pass, you will get through this” wraps up the article perfectly…

  1. I saw your comment on Meditations in Motion saying you had just started your blog. It can be hard getting started as it is with so many things but I want to encourage you to stay with it. I have been thinking a lot about thankfulness, too, and wrote a short post on the subject recently. God says we are to be thankful even in difficulties and as a believer in Christ, I know I can be because I know He is always at work, even when it doesn’t make sense to me. Blessings to you, Ash.

Any feedback is welcome! Let me know what you think about the post...
